Friend x

It's funny how things work out sometimes, isn't it.
Last summer, one of my good friends introduced me one day to his new girlfriend B. I smiled warmly and said hello, and she said "I used to know you, you used to be friends with G didn't you....?" and I suddenly remembered her and smiled the fakest smile ever, and through gritted teeth said "yeah..!" while all the time my brain was screaming "I HATE you!"
You see, G was my childhood best buddy, and we had gone to different secondary schools when we turned 11. Obviously she made new friends at her new school, B being one of them, and when I met them, it seemed fine.... but then she told me that B hated me, and was always slagging me off! Well! I didn't know what I had done to offend this creature, but she could get lost!
Anyway, G and I didn't last long after that, and by age 14 we were pretty much strangers. I've never spoken to her since, and only ever saw her in the street from time to time.
Fast forward 14 years and here is B - my friends new girlfriend! I remembered how nasty G had told me she'd been about me all those years ago, and instantly disliked her all over again! She was pretty pleasant to me now - but I still made little effort. Much to my relief, I didn't see her much and then they split up after a short while - yay! So, off we go to the Reading festival last summer, and as we're setting up all our tents, I noticed a little one in our circle - upon asking whose tent it was, someone replied to say "B's and her mates - they're camping with us!"
I sat with a face on for a while, sulkily drinking my vodka's, and then that night we headed to the fair. All of a sudden, I realised how stupid I was being to let it spoil my weekend - so I had a word with myself, and decided to just suck it up and get on with it. As the weekend evolved, I found myself talking to her quite comfortably, and decided she really wasn't that bad after all. I realised how long ago it had been - we were just kids! Surely I could forgive and forget.
And so I did. And we had fun.
A few months after Reading, she started seeing one of my oldest, dearest friends. And I was happy for him. And as time has evolved, and we've laughed together, I've come to really like her. And the more I felt comfortable around her, the more I opened up - and one night after we'd all been out drinking one day, I told her all about G and why I had disliked her so at first... and do you know? G was a lying little witch because she had been telling me lies all along! Figures now, looking back.
We laugh about it now - but I've come to love this girl like I do my other friends. I no longer think of her as my friends girlfriend. I think of her as my friend. And maybe it's just me, but I really do feel like we have a connection - like we could be really great friends for a long time. I hope so.
And I'm glad none of my friends read my blog, because this is way too deep for them to handle :)

Makes you feel all grown up when you realise that what happened in the past, should stay in the past :) ... I'm so glad you've called her a friend now.
